Vision Prep Reopening Plans

Vision Prep is currently finalizing reopening plans for the 2020-21 school year, and we will offer our families the choice between virtual or in-person schooling. Our priority continues to be keeping our families and staff as safe as possible during the upcoming year.

VISION PREP WILL PROVIDE A SYSTEM FOR CHOOSING OPTIONS.  VISION PREP FAMILIES SHOULD NOT USE SCS FOR THIS STEP.

We intend to send out our final plans for reopening no later than Friday, July 10. In that communication, we will include more details about options for scholars and a survey for families to make their choice for 2020-2021.  Choices will need to be made by July 20 so that we can assign teachers, prepare plans, and finalize Chrome Book/Chrome Tablet distribution. The decision you make will apply to the entire first semester.

Please note, if you choose the in-person option, there is still a chance that, depending on mandates from the state and district, in-person instruction may shift to virtual based on the severity of the pandemic.

We know many of you are anxious about what next year will look like, and we want to reassure you that the Vision Prep leadership team has been working hard all summer to make sure we have a successful 2020-2021 school year. The uncertainty is difficult for all of us but know that we are hard at work to make sure that our staff and scholars feel supported and safe no matter how instruction is delivered.  We are also planning Facebook live and recorded virtual sessions to answer parent questions about our plans.

School Calendar Update

SCS has also communicated that they may push back the start date of the school year to August 31. The school year will be the same length and contain optional enrichment days for scholars.  If SCS pushes their start day back, we will push ours back.

Dates to Remember

  • July 10 Communication sent detailing the two options (in-person or virtual).
  • July 10 Technology survey for all families begins.
  • July 20 All families must communicate their decision for the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year.

We pray that all our Vision Prep scholars and families stay safe and healthy.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us by email (tbenton@visionprep.org) or phone (901) 775-1018.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!!
LEARNING PACKET GRADING
and REPORT CARD GUIDELINES
END-OF-YEAR 2019-2020

  1. Third Quarter Report Cards were mailed the week of May 4-8.
    • Third Quarter grades are averages of scholar work completed before school was closed for COVID-19. For families who have moved or do not receive a copy in the mail, report cards may also be picked up at the school in the main office the week of May 11-15 during work hours (9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.).
  2. Final 2019-2020 Report Cards (with promotion/retention information) will be mailed on Friday, May 29.
    • Final Grades for school year 2019-2020 will be calculated by averaging Quarters 1, 2, and 3. Scholars who submit completed home learning work packets will have between 1 to 5 points in Reading and Math added to their final report card grade based on the volume of work completed. This could result in an increase in a letter grade. For example, if a scholar earns a 73/D in Reading but completes and turns in all Home Learning Activities, 5 points will be added to increase the final Reading grade to a 78/C. (See submission details below)
      • a. May 4-8: Last week for new Learning Activity packets
      • b. May 11-15: Scholars should turn in completed work to VPCS to increase final Reading and Math grades.
        • Scholar work packets can be dropped off in the main office during work hours (9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.) or placed on the porch (anytime May 11-15). Large zip lock bags will be available on the porch for your scholar’s work.
        • OR work can be sent by email to homelearning@visionprep.org
        • If paper copies of work are submitted, the scholar’s first and last name, and grade should be on packets for credit.
        • If emailed copies of work are submitted, the scholar’s first and last name, and grade should be in the subject line of the email.

COVID-19 UPDATE (SCHOOL re-OPENING no earlier than APRIL 27th)

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee recommended that all school districts in the state remain closed through April 24th. In compliance with this request, Vision Prep will extend its current closure and will not re-open any earlier than Monday, April 27th. We will continue to collaborate with both educational and health care professionals at the local, county and state levels regarding best practices, and we will share additional, ongoing information with our Vision Prep families and employees in the coming days. Thank you for your support.

SCHOLAR MEAL
DISTRIBUTION SUSPENDED
PER SCS NUTRITION CENTER

CLICK HERE TO SEE LIST OF LOCAL FOOD PANTRIES

Vision Prep families - the meals we planned to distribute were coming from the SCS Central Nutrition Center and they have suspended the operation. Please read the note from their website:

UPDATE (3/20/20): SCS MEAL DISTRIBUTION SUSPENDED – The Shelby County Health Department has confirmed that an employee in the SCS Nutrition Services Department tested positive for COVID-19. As a result of this news, we have no choice but to suspend all planned meal distribution for students indefinitely. Our intent has always been to ensure students continue to receive the meals they depend on in our schools during this closure, so this is extremely unfortunate. However, there are simply too many unknown factors about the spread of this virus to take any chances of putting more people at risk. We will continue working with the Health Department to assess the situation, but in the meantime we will be calling on City and County government and other community food distributors to help provide urgent support and food resources for our children during this school closure period.

School closure (MARCH 13 - MARCH 27)

Today, SCS took a proactive step to ensure the safety of all students and staff. They announced that all classes will be canceled for two weeks, beginning Friday, March 13, through Friday, March 27. Schools are scheduled to reopen on Monday, March 30. Vision Prep agrees with this decision. Schools will be closed a total of 11 days, including five scheduled days for Spring Break March 16-20. To avoid the loss of required instructional days for the remainder of the year, Vision Prep and the SCS District will be utilizing six days reserved for inclement weather.

VISION PREP WILL FOLLOW THESE SAME CLOSURE GUIDELINES. To further ensure scholar safety, our custodial staff will spend time over the break to deep clean all flat surfaces and other critical areas.

We are committed to keeping Vision Prep families informed of any new developments – even while classes are canceled. Updates will come in the form of text/voicemail blasts, FB posts, and website messages.

We pray that your family stays safe and well during this break.
